‘Fencing expansion, Visa rules’: Shah on steps taken by Centre on Manipur violence

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed a press conference on Tuesday on the achievements of the NDA Government, during the first 100 days of returning to power for the third successive term. The home minister said that apart from the three days of violence last week, the situation is largely peaceful and calm. Shah added that the Centre is working towards restoring peace in Manipur.

Talking about the steps taken by the Centre on Manipur, since returning to power earlier this year, the government said that work on fencing the India-Myanmar border. He added that while the fencing work on 30 km fencing has been started, the government has approved a budget to fence the border up to 1,500 km.

He added that the government also scraped the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR), which allowed people from both countries to move around into each other’s territory up to 16 km without any documents. He added that people can now cross into each other’s country only with a visa.

Shah, while talking further about the steps taken by the Centre on Manipur, told reporters that the deployment of the Central Reserve Police Force personnel was also completed at the strategic locations of the state. Sharing further details about the initiative taken by the Centre, he added that the talks are on with Kuki and Meitei groups and a roadmap has also been prepared.

Violence in Manipur since last year

Notably, the state has been witnessing the violence since last year, following a tribal solidarity march in various parts of Manipur to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. More than 220 people belonging to both the Kuki and Meitei communities have lost their lives in violence since then.
