New Delhi: In a chilling incident that has come to light from Pune, a prowling leopard attacked a pet dog, grabbed it in its mouth and escaped. The incident occurred in Warulwadi area near Narayangaon of Junnar tehsil late on Saturday night.

It has triggered panic among the local residents, as sightings of leopards have become quite frequent in the area.

A CCTV footage of the entire incident is going viral. In the video, it can seen that the pet dog is taken completely unawares by the predator, which pounces on it as the dog was moving in the area. The leopard emerges from nowhere, and grabs the pet dog in its mouth, and melts into darkness. It was a pet dog of a local. The attack comes close on the heels of spotting of a leopard on the Rajarambapu Institute of Technology campus on Pune outskirts. Back then, a search operation by forest and fire brigade officials was carried out in the area. Wildlife experts were also pressed into service.

In June, Junnar was declared as “potential leopard disaster-prone areas”, along with four Pune tehsils. Around 233 villages come under these four tehsils. Ambegaon, Khed and Shirur are the areas which are most prone to leopard attacks.

The state forest department is seeking the nod of the additional director general of wildlife in the Union forests ministry to carry out sterilisation of 47 leopards.
