India Takes Flight: Government seals Rs 26,000 crore deal for Sukhoi-30MKI with HAL

New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s air strength, the Defence Ministry has inked a Rs 26,000 crore contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to procure 240 aero-engines. These engines, crucial for powering the IAF’s fleet of 259 Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets, will ensure the continued operational strength of this important part of India’s aerial defence.

Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari and Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane signed the deal to “bolster India’s indigenous manufacturing capabilities.” HAL will manufacture the AL-31FP aero-engines at its Koraput division, with some components sourced from Russia. The contract also emphasises a strategic move towards self-reliance, with HAL aiming to achieve 63 per cent indigenisation content by the end of the delivery timeframe.

The decision to procure engines in bulk, rather than piecemeal orders, is expected to bring down costs and further enhance indigenous content. Recognising the importance of engine replacement during a fighter’s lifespan, this move signifies a proactive approach towards maintaining the IAF’s combat readiness.

This large-scale procurement comes at a critical juncture for the IAF, which has been grappling with a fighter squadron shortfall. According to the defence experts, the deal will not only ensure the sustained operational capability of the Sukhoi-30MKI fleet but also address the long-standing challenge of indigenously producing high-performance aero-engines.
