New Delhi: While the world anticipated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this month, a revised provisional list released by the UN mentioned External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India on September 28.

The Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management, Movses Abelian, stated that the revised list was made through dialogues among member states.

This year, the 79th UNGA General Debate will continue for 7 days, from September 24 to 30. The opening ceremony of the debate will be thrown open by Brazil on September 24. After opening the debate, US President Joe Biden will deliver the final address before the U.S. presidential elections slated in November.

While Modi will not deliver the traditional address at the UNGA General Debate, he will visit New York and engage with a large gathering of the Indian diaspora at a major community event at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island on September 22.

This event, marking a decade since his iconic 2014 Madison Square Garden address, is expected to draw over 24,000 attendees.

Moreover, Modi will participate in the UN’s “Summit of the Future,” scheduled for September 22-23, where global leaders will discuss the “Pact for the Future,” encompassing a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations.

PM Modi’s visit comes at a significant juncture, coinciding with the US presidential election featuring a contest between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.
