Kolkata: Thousands of people in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal will take part in the third edition of the ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign on midnight of September 8 to protest against the recent rape and murder of the junior doctor at the city’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The event will be held to mark the one month of the heinous crime in the city that led to massive anger and protests across Kolkata and other parts of the country.

The last two editions of the ‘Reclaim the Night’ were held on August 14 and September 4. A large number of people from all walks of life from the city and several parts of the country participated in the campaign to demand justice for the Kolkata victims. While participants took part in candlelight marches on both occasions, lights were also switched off on September 4 to mark the protest against the incident.

How the campaign turned out to be a mass protest

Speaking to the news agency PTI, social activist and part of the campaign, Rimjhim Sinha, said that organisers had initially thought of the gathering of women in three to four places in Kolkata, however, it turned out to be a mass protest. People participated in large numbers in several parts of Kolkata and other parts of Kolkata.

Sinha also said that organizers have been receiving various phone calls and messages since the movement started. Pointing out that people want a safe environment for women, he added that governments in the state as well as the Centre have failed to provide the same for several years.

Kolkata court rejects accused’s bail plea

The resident doctor’s body was found inside RG Kar Medical colleges in August, with injury marks showing the signs of rape. The police have arrested a civic volunteer, identified as Sanjoy Roy, in connection with the crime. On Friday, a Kolkata court rejected his bail plea and sent him judicial custody till September 20.
