New Delhi: CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury was shifted to ventilator on Thursday after his health condition deteriorate. The condition of the 72-year-old leader, who is admitted at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, is said to be critical, sources said on Thursday.
The CPI(M) leader was admitted to the emergency ward of the Delhi’s premium hospital on August 19 for treatment of a lung infection. He was later shifted to intensive care unit (ICU) of the private ward of AIIMS. On Thursday, he was put on ventilator as his medical condition turned serious.
The CPI(M) leader’s health condition is constantly being monitored by a team of senior doctors of the hospital, the sources said. Yechury was admitted to AIIMS for the treatment of infection like pneumonia. The hospital did not disclose the exact nature of his ailment. He had recently undergone cataract surgery too.

Sitaram Yechury is the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). A prominent political personality, the 72-year-old bagged the Best Parliamentarian Award in 2016 while being a Rajya Sabha MP. He started his political career as a student leader and joined the Students Federation of India (SFI) in 1974. He became a member of the CPI(M) a year later. During the Emergency period, Yechury, who was then a JNU student, was arrested. He was released later and elected as the leader of the JNU Students’ Union.
