‘Face contempt…’: Centre moves SC over no support to CISF guarding Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital

New Delhi: The Centre has approached the Supreme Court seeking direction to the West Bengal government to extend full support to CISF that is looking after the security arrangements at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata or initiate contempt proceedings. The paramilitary force took control of security at the state-run medical facility after a shocking incident of vandalism in the aftermath of the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor last month.

The Centre alleged that CISF personnel who are guarding the hospital are facing huge accommodation problems. It also said that women personnel are not getting proper accommodation or space to store security equipment and transport.

The Supreme Court had last month ordered deployment of CISF at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to enable doctors to resume work amid huge nationwide outrage over the rape and murder incident.

The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the state-run hospital on August 9. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the case the next day. On August 15, a group of people entered the hospital and vandalised the emergency department, nursing station, and medicine store, and also damaged CCTV cameras.

Following the incident, the top court had pulled up the West Bengal government and Kolkata Police. The Sc ha said that the state government was expected to ensure the deployment of the state machinery to prevent a breach of law and order. “It was all the more necessary to do so since investigation of the crime which took place in the precincts of the hospital was underway. We are unable to comprehend how the state was not prepared to deal with the incident of vandalisation of the premises of the hospital,” the apex court had said.
