Chamoli: Communal tension gripped Chamoli district’s Nandanagar on Sunday when a large group of people attacked and vandalised the shops belonging to members of the minority community. This mob demanded for the immediate arrest of the accused who allegedly made obscene gestures at a 14-year-old girl. Later, the main accused in this case was arrested in Bijnor.

CM had given instructions to take action in the case of molestation of a minor in Chamoli. He also said that the culprits will not be spared, women’s respect is the top priority of our government. The police reported that the minor’s father filed a complaint at Nandprayag police station on Saturday. He accused Arif Khan, a salon worker in Nandanagar, of molesting his minor daughter on August 22.

A molestation case has ignited communal tension in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. On Sunday, a mob allegedly ransacked and vandalized around six shops owned by Muslims in Nandanagar. This incident followed accusations that a 25-year-old man from the minority community made an obscene gesture towards a minor girl. Security was stepped up in the area following the violence, said senior police officers, adding that the situation was under control.

Five to six shops were burnt by mob

“We received a complaint that the accused exposed himself to a 14-year-old girl. An FIR has been lodged under relevant sections, including POCSO. The accused is currently on the run, and efforts are underway to apprehend him,” stated Chamoli SP Sarvesh Panwar. “Today (Sunday), a mob gathered in the market, held a procession, and vandalized 5-6 shops, all of which were owned by Muslims,” Panwar added.

The accused has been arrested from Bijnor

The main accused in the Chamoli case, Arif, has been arrested in Bijnor. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took the incident of molestation of a minor in Chamoli very seriously and immediately directed strict action. The Chief Minister stated that the guilty will not be spared in this case. He mentioned that appropriate action has been instructed to the Chamoli police administration. The Chief Minister condemned such acts strongly, emphasizing that women’s safety is a top priority for his government and that the respect for women is of utmost importance.
