‘Their silence is worse than the crime’: VP Dhankhar slams ‘certain NGOs’ over Kolkata rape-murder

New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday criticised certain non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for their alleged silence regarding the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

“Certain NGOs, who often take to the streets over the slightest incident, are now in silence mode. We must question them. Their silence is far worse than the culpable actions of those who committed the heinous crime that happened on August 9 2024,” Dhankhar as said at Rashtriya Military College Dehradun.

He further added, “Those who are eager to play politics and score brownie points, constantly writing letters to one another, are failing to respond to the call of their conscience.”

This is not the first time Vice President Dhankhar has addressed the Kolkata murder case, which has sparked widespread outrage across the nation. On Friday, he said that the incident is “painful” and called for a deterrent system to ensure severe punishment for the perpetrators. Additionally, Dhankhar criticized Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Kapil Sibal for describing the incident as a “symptomatic malaise” in a purported resolution and suggesting that such events are commonplace.

“I am appalled, pained, and somewhat surprised that someone holding a position in the Supreme Court Bar, a Member of Parliament, would act in such a manner. To describe the incident as a ‘symptomatic malaise’ and suggest that such events are commonplace is disgraceful. Words fail me in condemning such a stance. It is a great injustice to the esteemed position held, ” he said.

“Is this for partisan or self-interest? Are you using your position to perpetuate such heinous injustice against our girls and women? What could be a greater injustice to humanity? We will no longer trivialize the suffering of our girls.”
