Ukraine President proposes summit in India for end of war with Russia | Details

New Delhi: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiyy has proposed a summit in India to end the ongoing war with Russia. The proposal was put before PM Modi during his recent visit. Zeleneskiyy is looking to hold the summit in India in November just before the presidential elections in the United States. The summit, if held, will be a follow-up of the one that was held in June. Through this summit, Ukraine is looking to get support from nations of the Global South against Russia.

The summit in India will be a massive boost for Ukraine as the same would be viewed as progress for the country, a report by news agency Bloomberg said on Friday. During his recent visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also expressed India’s willingness to play an important role in the peace process.

Increase in urgency for diplomatic efforts

The urgency for diplomatic efforts have increased with both Russian and Ukraine forces accelerating their attacks against each other in recent times. While Russia has gained ground in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine, Ukrainian forces entered into Russia’s Kursk region earlier this month. As per Serhiy Nykyforov, a spokesperson of the Ukranian government, the country to looking to hold another summit in a country from the Global South, particularly India, Bloomberg reported further.

India’s response during the first edition of the summit

Notably, while India participated in the first edition of the summit, New Delhi refrained from associating with the communique that that came out after the deliberations. At the time, India had asserted that it would remain engaged with all stakeholders for the peaceful resolution to the region. During the summit, nearly twelve countries had expressed their support for Ukraine and had suggested talks among all stakeholders for lasting solutions of the ongoing conflict.
